And now for the fun part - the interview!!
1) How does your art practice fit in to your life?
Right now I'm struggling to get my inventory up because I've been so busy with school but jewelry remains a passion and hobby of mine. I usually design and make 1-2 pieces (Skeleton Key Necklaces) per week. I'm inspired mostly after I hit the flea market or when someone gives me something interesting to incorporate into a necklace. When I'm really lucky I get the chance to hit the beach or go home and collect River Rock's for the pendants. I usually make the pendants in one event, I'll do about a dozen. These have to be etched with some power tools and take focus for each one so I try to make them in an afternoon when I have time to give them the attention they need. After they're etched, I keep them and wrap them when I can, usually when sitting on my balcony watching the cars go by!
2) Where does everything come together?
I have an old refrigerator cart that has lots of shelves, in those shelves are dozens of boxes with my various materials. The cart, sadly, usually sits in my closet but I bring out each box as I need the supplies inside.
3) Do you have any specific goals for your Etsy site or art practice?
I'd love to have my online business pick up but I understand that there are so many great Etsy sellers. The good thing is, I know people like my work and there are people willing to buy in every art medium. I just have to find my niche of customers! Ultimately, I would like to have my things in a few art galleries/shops and have a steady internet business.
4) What would be your super power if you could have one?
I'd have amazing mind powers, e.g. photographic memory, or be able to download journal articles and save them in my head. With my amazing mind powers I'd also like to have the ability to read others minds (but not all the time!) and make things move! That would be SWEET!
5) Recommend a good book and movie
Mmm. Last book I read was one given to me by a friend, and I loved it! On Agate Hill, Lee Smith. Also, I want to see Iron Man II and heard it was good!
6) Where do you live in the world? What do you like most about it?
I grew up in Sylva, NC but have lived in Raleigh for the past five years because I'm attending North Carolina State University. I love both places and have learned to appreciate Sylva more and more as I get older. Sylva is minutes away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mountains are gorgeous, especially in the summer when everything is thick and green. This is where my passion for jewelry design/making began, read my Etsy profile for more! I love Raleigh for several reasons, its big enough to not be a "college town" even though there are probably over 40k NCSU/Meredith/Peace/Shaw students. The NC Art Museum is about 2 miles from my apartment, theres a huge flea market held in the state fair grounds every weekend, also about 2 miles from my apartment. Raleigh has the Carolina Hurricanes and is close enough to sneak away to a Durham Bulls baseball game. So many great things about Raleigh, Sylva, and North Carolina as a whole. Could write a whole blog about it!
