No posts this long weekend

Hi everyone! I am currently working on updating my entire blog - moving to wordpress and setting it up on my own server. I am redesigning it all and moving all my blogger posts as well. I've never used wordpress before, so I am giving myself the weekend off from blogging to get things set-up over there!

Please use www.beingtazim.com (which, for now, redirects here), for all future ventures over to my blog! I hope to make the new site live by Tuesday!

*for the Favourite Things Friday post about favourite local artists, I will post it early next week, and then do the regularly scheduled post on Friday.

Have a great labour day weekend everyone!

Artist Interview Feature - Cindy from Dixie Pixie

Artfire seller and artist Cindy Thomson let me interview her for this artist feature. Cindy creates jewelry and sells them in her Artfire shop here. Check out some of Cindy's products here:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family!
I am 31 years old and I currently work as a public school elementary school music teacher.  I currently live in SW Kansas and teach here in a small school district but I'm a native of northern MN.  My immediate family lives up there.  I have a younger sister and brother.  My sister is married with 3 beautiful little girls... my lovely nieces.  My parents still live up there as well and I try to visit them at least 3 times a year but we are working on visiting each other more.
I have a wonderful boyfriend down here in Kansas.  His name is Lee.  He makes me laugh and is the best dance partner ever.

How did you come up with your shop name?
One year a friend of mine and I decided we wanted to make hand puppets to take the Renaissance festival with us.  She had an old pattern stowed away and we set to work making the king, princess, queen and jester puppets.  The jester ended up being my favorite.... so I made more of them.  I also had gotten into making my own jewelry about the same time and thus the name.... Fools and Jewels.  Sadly, the jester puppets don't seem to sell well so I quit making them.

Where do you create your items?
Most of them are created at home while I am sitting on my bed watching/listening to the TV.  Sometimes I take my stuff on the road and create things on my lunch break, out in the park, at a craft show and at my bf's place.

Wednesdays are for Farmers Markets

It's Wednesday, that time of the week when I walk to the farmers market to load up on fruit and vegetables! This usually takes about 2 hours and is completely exhausting! The one I go to is the closest one, and I can walk to it, but it is always busy with people, their bikes and their dogs.

I love buying organic produce, which is easy to find in this city, but have noticed an increase in prices over the years at the market. It used to be that you could get an amazing deal on produce there, but after that 100 Mile Diet book and eating organic being in the news so often, I'm sure that the price of produce has gone up.

What do I usually pick up?
-garlic
-tomatoes
-red peppers
(lots of the above 3)
-eggplant
-lettuce
-sometimes corn (last few weeks), potatoes, broccoli/broccolini, cherries, strawberries (up until a month ago), basil, fennel . . .

What about you? Where do you get your produce and do you try to eat in season?

There are usually lilies and peonys at my farmers market. . .
these roses look amazing, though!

A bit of Artfire love for a change. I am a member/seller there, too. Try not to get TOO hungry!

Living the Life of Dreams - Shop Talk Tuesday

This article makes me happy. Two Canadians about the same age as Greg and I move to a completely new-to-them province to live the life of their dreams. Did I mention that they also came from Vancouver?

These two people took up residence in a run-down place and fixed it up. . .just one of the things on my list of things I want to do in my life. . .although, their place seems a bit less liveable than I'd like mine to be. Still, I do dream of having a cheap fixer-upper.

Within a year, I would love to have studio space to support a letterpress machine.

What are your dreams and goals for your handmade business or creative practice?
